NTU Enterprise Supports Refugees to Start Businesses in the UK
NTU Enterprise, in partnership with Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum, is proud to announce the successful completion of the ‘Enterprise in Refuge’ programme. This transformative 8-week initiative supported 14 refugees and asylum seekers to formulate viable business ideas and work towards launching their own businesses in the UK. The refugees including men and women who have been forced to flee their own countries to seek safety and protection in Nottingham.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
The ‘Enterprise in Refuge’ programme was designed to provide participants with the essential skills and knowledge needed to navigate the UK business landscape. Over the course of eight weeks, participants engaged in sessions delivered by a range of experts, covering critical areas such as:
- Developing Key Business Skills: Equipping participants with the foundational skills required to manage and grow a business.
- Understanding How to Start a Business in the UK: Providing detailed guidance on the legal and administrative steps involved in setting up a business.
- Information, Help, Advice, and Support: Offering comprehensive support to address specific challenges faced by refugee entrepreneurs.
- Recognising Individual Needs: Tailoring the programme to accommodate the unique needs of each participant.
- Simple Approaches: Focusing on straightforward, practical methods for business success.
Each session was supported by interpreters to ensure clear communication and understanding among participants, breaking down language barriers and fostering a collaborative learning environment.
The programme’s success is a testament to the strength and determination of its participants, as well as the collaborative efforts of NTU Enterprise and Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum. This initiative not only provided refugees and asylum seekers with the tools needed to start their own businesses but also contributed to their integration into the local community and economy.
Jane Brown, Enterprise Advisor at NTU Enterprise led the programme and commented: “We are incredibly proud of what the participants have achieved over such as short period of time. Supporting refugees can often be marred by difficulties and challenges, and finding work is one of many pressures that refugees face when they arrive in the UK. Self-employment or starting a business gives an opportunity to generate income and make a valuable contribution to the communities the refugees now call home.”
“This programme highlights the importance of providing accessible and tailored support to refugees and asylum seekers, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to our society.”
“Some of the stories we’ve been privy to from the group have shown their incredible resilience and talent. We look forward to seeing the positive impact these new businesses will have on our community.”
Jane Oakley, Employability Case Worker at Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum, added: “The ‘Enterprise in Refuge’ programme is a shining example of how collaboration and support can empower individuals facing significant challenges.”
“It’s important to note that they asylum seekers who took part are unable to start their businesses until their status is granted, but the programme gives them a head-start towards their future and helps them to develop key competencies and skills. We are delighted to have been a part of this journey and are inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit shown by all participants.”
